Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE)

The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) aims to create better buildings and places. We believe that the design of buildings, streets and public places has an impact on everyone, every minute of every day. We think it is possible to make our every day experiences more enjoyable and more fun by improving our surroundings.

We make sure that new schemes which are about to be built are well designed by talking to architects, designers, local planners, people who live nearby and the people paying for the project. We call this Design Review.

We work closely with people who are right at the beginning of the process of constructing a new building – School Governors, for example, who need advice to put together all the information needed to make sure that architects and engineers design the best possible building for their particular needs. We call this process Enabling.

Everything CABE does is geared towards making people more aware of the buildings and places around them. We do lots of campaigning work, showing the impact that the design of buildings has. We have worked with Radio 5 to find out what people think about the design of new sports buildings. We also worked with the BBC on Streets of Shame which asked for nominations of favourite and least favourite streets. We want to know what people like and dislike so that new buildings take these ideas into account.

Through public campaigns we hope to get everyone looking at the buildings and streets around them and questioning why they have been designed that way and how they might be improved. Some of these people – people like you – might find this as fascinating as we do and start to try and change the built environment for the better.
