Building Visions
CREATIVE CAREERS IN THE CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONS
This construction industry sponsored video is targeted at young people aged 14-18, who are thinking about their career choices.
Helen Stone OBE
Dear Reader,
How do you choose a career? What helps you decide?
In our industry-sponsored video we hope to show you some of the creative and inspiring career opportunities in the construction professions.
Young professionals tell us about their projects and explain how they shape our surroundings to fit our lifestyles.
We meet an architect, building services engineer, quantity surveyor, civil engineer, structural engineer, and planner.
We enter their design offices, and visit construction sites and completed buildings. We learn how they work as part of a team;
why they chose their careers, what they studied, and why they enjoy their work.
In this booklet accompanying the video, you will find information about each of our sponsors.
There are companies who would like to hear from you if you want work experience and there are industry organisations which can give you careers information and advice.
There are links to other websites for each of the professions.
If you want to talk to someone about one of the professions, you can phone the careers section at the relevant professional Institution.
My own career story is that a trip up the newly-opened M1 motorway when I was 10 made me want to be a civil engineer.
In my twenties I achieved my ambition, and designed and built my own motorways and bridges.
Since then I have worked on construction projects as exciting and varied as a theme park, aircraft hangar, shopping centre, hotel, petrochemical plant, drilling rigs, and an oil refinery.
I hope this video will build visions for you, and that you too will make your visions real.
Good luck in your career.
Best wishes,
Helen Stone OBE, FREng, BSc, CEng, FICE
Chairman, CIC Diversity Panel
