WOMEN AS ROLE MODELS

WOMEN AS ROLE MODELS (WARM) is an interdisciplinary association of women in the construction industry comprising of property and construction industry professionals such as architects, engineers and surveyors.  Its objectives are fourfold.  The first is to enable women in the construction industry to act as role models to female students and younger members of the construction professions.  Secondly to enable women in the construction industry to show by example to male students and colleagues that women can function as competently as themselves in the construction professions.  Thirdly to raise awareness of women in the construction professions in order that they may be perceived as role models, through the media and published materials resources for use in schools.  Finally to arrange for women construction professionals to visit schools to assist them with projects and careers days.

The organisation was set up in 1990 and gained charitable status in 1992.  The strength of the organisation lies in the commitment made by both teachers and construction industry professionals to developing projects for use in schools.  WARM has developed sound working relationships with other organisations in the field of education and links with the construction industry, locally, regionally and nationally.  It has provided work shadowing placements for school pupils considering careers in construction, placed young women on the CITB's Young Presenters' Course, arranged visits by professional women to schools for careers days or project work in schools, developed a school project to fit within the National Curriculum.  The Equal Opportunities Commission at an early stage provided funds for display boards showing women professionals at work in various construction professions which have been sent to schools and careers days around the UK.
