The CIC Carbon Criticality Initiative
CIC has a commitment towards the Government’s Strategy for Sustainable Construction (launched in 2008) to develop and deliver a work programme by its members in support of sustainability. Having adopted a strategy of using carbon as a proxy for sustainability, CIC then conducted an audit of activity of members of the Construction Industry Council (CIC) in relation to carbon
In a further move to chart current activity within this area, CIRIA have been promoting an initiative to map the work of all bodies involved with carbon. CIC has encouraged its members to participate in this initiative.
Work streams
In tandem with this, work is proceeding in developing a programme of activity in support of the carbon criticality initiative developed around several work streams which will be lead by some CIC members. Work streams identified to date include: Skills, Information and Training (ICE); Design (RIBA); Housing (NHBC/ NHF), Planning (RTPI), Operations (CIBSE/BIFM) and Decision Tools (RICS). The lead organisations are shown in brackets.
The task groups bring together existing initiatives and promote the low carbon message in the built environment sphere by means of CPD, information sharing and the development off standards, qualifications and toolkits. The first drafts of the work programmes have been submitted and these are being co-ordinated into an overall plan which is progressively updated.
Work done to date done by the groups and already published is set out in the table below, along with links to relevant matters produced under the auspices of the Carbon Trust.
