Health and Safety
The CIC health and safety panel provides a forum for health and safety representatives from CIC’s members to meet, shape policy, discuss initiatives and develop responses on behalf of CIC. Membership of the panel includes the major chartered institutions, APS, ACE, ICW, IStructE and HSE.
Under the chairmanship of Gordon Masterton, the panel meets to take part in consultations on behalf of CIC. Recently a small task force from the panel was invited to meet Rita Donaghy who is carrying out a major inquiry into construction fatalities.
The panel also oversees on-going operational matters. One of the principle issues it is concerned with is the CSCS PQP card which is due to be relaunched later this year. The underlying concept behind this card is that holders of CSCS cards can quickly and simply prove (to contractors, clients etc) that their health and safety knowledge is up to date. Significant work has been undertaken to alter the health and safety test in relation to the card and the definition of “non-resident” appropriate to PQP has been clarified. This work will continue to be monitored by the Health and Safety panel.
The panel also forms a bridge with other bodies such as the Construction Industry Advisory Committee (CONIAC). A representative of the panel reports regularly on CONIAC activity.
A major review of the work of the health and safety panel is now under way. One product of this review will be a report charting guidance, training and initiatives which are being taken by CIC member institutions in relation to the CDM regulations.
