1. New Student Competition Launched
A new student competition, Future Inclusive, has been launched by DPTAC. The competition is open to undergraduates throughout the UK and aims to generate a lifetime's interest and commitment to the principles of inclusive environments amongst tomorrow's professionals.

The prize is a £1,000 bursary to the student winner, all short listed entries will receive £100 and £1,000 will be awarded to the lecturer who best demonstrates support for inclusive principles. Submissions need to be part of coursework and should be submitted by the end of May 2004. To find out more about the competition visit www.dptac.gov.uk or contact rbiggs@cic.org.uk

2. ACE Awards 2004 - still just time to enter
The ACE Awards are a showcase for the best in engineering consultancy and are an excellent opportunity to raise the profile of your company, but only if you enter! The closing date for entries is Friday 23 January 2003 and there are two awards to enter – Outstanding Achievement and The Young Consulting Engineer of the Year Award.

The awards will be presented at an exclusive lunch at Claridge's on 23 March 2004, hosted by New Civil Engineer magazine and ACE.

ACE's Outstanding Achievement Award celebrates individuals or teams who have demonstrated excellence in the profession. If you have someone special in your firm, or an outstanding team that has excelled, this award is for them.

The Young Consulting Engineer of the Year Award, now in its 17th year, is open to all engineers aged 35 years and under. With a record entry last year, competition is sure to be keen once again. Entrants in this award provide a report on an aspect of engineering, either project based or more general, and are judged on commitment to best practice, innovation and an understanding of the role of the engineer in society.

Full details of the ACE Awards 2004 can be found at www.acenet.co.uk or email consult@acenet.co.uk

3. CPD www.cpdevents.org.uk
Construction Industry Council South East (CIC-SE) has championed an innovative website database that will hold information on all CPD and events organised by major providers. A unique service, to enable professionals to seek out the most appropriate vehicle for maintaining their Continuing Professional Development.

CIC-SE has launched the pilot of this unique website which will be further developed to include all far-sighted professional institutions and recognized organizers of continuing professional development activities in the South East. The pilot partners include four professional institutions (CIOB, RTPI, ICE, RIBA) the Construction Best Practice Programme and South East Centre for the Built Environment. Links from each institution’s website will open up www.cpdevents.org.uk to enable the user to search all participants’ events.

In this way, every construction professional is encouraged to learn alongside other disciplines. This is a positive step towards breaking down traditional barriers between professions and achieving more integrated construction teams. Moving forward, it is hoped that collaborative event programmes will evolve to deliver better, cheaper and more challenging CPD.

The initial phase of this database has been funded by SEEDA, the South East England Development Agency. Inter-disciplinary CPD is regarded as central to the life-long learning culture critical to delivering the changes required in the Construction industry. Sustainable development is key to fulfilling SEEDA’s mission to become a “World Class” region.

Users can access appropriate events by entering relevant criteria, selecting to search by subject, date, location or any combination to refine the search. The data returned will include all appropriate events available from all contributing bodies. An opportunity to make an enquiry directly to the organizer is in place to enhance the booking procedure.

All professional bodies are invited to apply to have their events included in this collaborative events programme. The more contributors on board, the more comprehensive and useful the site will become.

Other regions have already identified the potential for developing a similar framework and discussions are already in hand to expand the service national.

4. "Demolition Day" - National Construction College
The National Construction College is helping to build ‘em up and knock ‘em down in a new prime time Channel 4 series. The National Construction College - the training division of CITB ConstructionSkills – believes that Demolition Day will promote the positive aspects of working in the construction industry.

Demolition day is an exciting new concept that turns the old childhood game of ‘build ‘em up, knock ‘em down’ into a larger-than-life series.

Filming for the eight-part series took place late last year at the purpose-built set at the National Construction College East in Bircham Newton, near King’s Lynn in Norfolk. The first of the hour-long programmes in the series was broadcast at 6.30pm on Sunday 4th January.

Each week in the series, two teams compete to design and build the strongest most defensive structure they can in three days from a range of unusual and demanding materials. Then on the fourth day it’s demolition day! The teams swap structures and the first to raze their opponent’s structure to the ground wins. Throughout filming, an ‘enforcer’ ensures that health and safety regulations are adhered to and the teams warned and penalized if they aren’t.
