3. Thousands visit London construction sites at OpenSite weekend
Over 3,000 Londoners visited construction sites around the capital
and experienced first hand the impact of engineering and construction
in the capital as part of the OpenSite initiative on 18-19 September
2004.
Progress Network, the Association
for Consultancy and Engineering’ (ACE)
group for young engineers and consultants under 35, organised OpenSite
by teaming up with London Open House, London’s biggest annual
live architecture event, to give the public the opportunity to visit
high-profile construction sites around the capital.
Visitors flocked to five London venues - Wembley Stadium, Channel
Tunnel Rail Link, Terminal 5 Heathrow, City Academy Southwark and
King’s College London - to learn about the role of engineering
and construction in shaping the fabric of the capital. Progress
Network members were present at the sites to highlight to visitors
the key role played by engineers in the design and construction of
London ’s new buildings.
ACE’s Matt Dawson, who project managed OpenSite, said: “The
fantastic turnout from Londoners of all ages shows that there is
a real interest in engineering, construction and the built and natural
environment. Many visitors were appreciative of the rare opportunity
to see at first hand the challenges, complexities, solutions and
excitement involved in constructing some of London ’s most
interesting landmarks. We look forward to building on the success
of OpenSite 2004 next year when we hope to have even more sites and
more people involved”
