This free programme is open to undergraduates on a placement of at least 12 weeks as part of any built environment degree and recent graduates embarking on a career in the construction profession.
Course Outlines:
Health and Safety in Design
Delegates are challenged to think well beyond normal health and safety laws. They are required to understand their responsibilities in relation to their own safety, the safety of others on projects in which they are involved, and their duties as designers to those who will build, operate, maintain or decommission the structures they work on.
The course is highly interactive and incorporates a number of visits. It will provide delegates with tools to become effective in improving the management of risk on projects in their role as designers.
Personal Development
This course is designed to enhance the core management skills of delegates as they move from academic into professional life.
• Work and Motivation
The delegate will be introduced to a range of current thinking on workplace motivation and performance management and how it impacts the individual as well as the organisation.
• Communication and Teamwork
This topic extends across a range of communication areas including body language, listening, questioning and assertiveness.
• Negotiation skills are also included using a number of role-play exercises.
• Time Management, Delegation and Creativity
A wide range of management essentials will be covered including all aspects of time management, delegation and coaching. Creativity is also demonstrated using a number of interactive methods.
Presentation Skills/Training
The aim of this course is to improve delegates’ presentation skills, and provide a basic understanding of typical learning styles and ways of engaging audiences. Topics covered include presentation structure, planning, memory problems and nerves. Students will deliver several presentations during the 2 days, including a Health and Safety presentation, based on their previous course attendance
