Established in 1998, The Happold Medal Lecture is held in memory of the CIC’s first chairman, Professor Sir Edmund (Ted) Happold, the founding senior partner of Buro Happold. Previous recipients of the Happold Medal are Patrick Bellew, Professor Sir Peter Hall, Sir Howard Bernstein, Tessa Tennant, Amory Lovins and Sir Crispen Tickell GCMG KCVO.
This year the Happold Medal will be presented to Paul Morrell OBE, the government’s Chief Construction Adviser, who will deliver the lecture entitled; ‘Can we get there from here?’ which will focus on integration and industry reform.
“Integration” is now a mantra, chanted as an essential element of fundamental industry reform, and there are very few who challenge its premise. Paul Morrell will argue that the green shoots of that reform, and the day when our clients can expect a cohesive proposition, aligned with their interests and running continuously from briefing, through design and construction and into operation still seem fragile or frost bound. Are the habits of hundreds of years now so deeply embodied in our education, institutions, business models and culture that we should just own up and give up – and make aggressive competition our clients’ only guardian? Is the vision of integrating just a mirage? Or can we get there from here? He will be joined by a panel of speakers who will introduce and debate the issues before answering question from the audience.
