In the past few decades there has been a sharp increase in the effect of weather disasters such as flooding and drought. In the UK, this has been quite distinct with drought and flood occurring within months of each other, and places that historically did not flood now becoming water hot spots.

Whilst global warming has been a contributing factor, is the manner in which we are constructing communities making matters much worse? After all, we are not just talking about the inconvenience of having one’s home or business under water, but also the health effects resulting from flood and drought.

The aim of the day is to have a greater understanding of how and why drought and flood affects communities and businesses and explore ways in which the construction industry can help mitigate the risks.

Environmental Context
Julian Jones, Director of Water 21
Understanding how drought, flooding, and water management affects the environment and action which could be taken to remedy the consequences.

The Business Case
Colin Harrop, Director of Jones Lang LaSalle
Illustrating how water security is a real concern for the property sector despite being considered secondary compared to energy and carbon issues.

Water in transit
David Evans, Associate Director at Arup
Exploring how surplus rainfall can be harvested from one area and piped to other areas where there are drought conditions.

Water usage and management
Stephanie Walden, Land Use Manager at Yorkshire Water
Outlining the mechanism by which water and sewerage companies manage the changing pressures on both water supply and demand.

Water and its impact on place-making and communities
Sue Illman, president of the Landscape Institute
Demonstrating how effective landscape design can significantly reduce the impact of flooding without creating physical and visual barriers, isolated spaces and lack of identity.

Water management and BIM
John de Souza, Chair of BIM4Water , BIM Task Group
Questioning how the benefits of BIM adoption in the water sector can improve data collection, pricing and health and safety.
