How can Ombudsman services be more effective? Lessons for the housing sector

This event has finished

Committee Room 18, Palace of Westminster
London
SW1A 0AA

From a consumer perspective, ADR can be an efficient, non-court way of getting redress in sectors from housing to financial services. Figures from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy show that over 2 million disputes have been resolved this way in the last 5 years, with 8 out of 10 saying their issue would not have been resolved without ADR.

However, there is room for improvement. In particular, on business participation where engagement is voluntary (business agreed to participate in only 6% of cases brought to the Consumer Ombudsman), and consumer awareness (Citizens Advice figures show only 28% of consumers with problems were aware of the ADR options open to them).

The APPG for ADR is partnering with other interested Parliamentary groups to explore how the sector can be more effective. Sector organisations will take questions from a panel of Parliamentarians, including:

John Howell MP (Chair, APPG for ADR)

Kevin Hollinrake MP (Chair, APPG for Fair Business Banking)

Yvonne Fovargue MP (Chair, APPG for Consumer Protection)

Lord Best (Vice-Chair, APPG for Excellence in the Built Environment)

Alberto Costa MP (Member, APPG for ADR)

Christina Rees MP (Vice-Chair, APPG for ADR)
