Health and Safety is clearly a priority in the construction industry. Due to the various Regulations, along with a greater awareness of the safety of our workforce, we now have one of the safest construction industries in the world.
However, the emphasis has generally been on the ‘safety’ aspect of Health and Safety – what about the ‘health’?
This is the first of a series of health leadership briefings from the Construction Industry Council Yorkshire and Humber, which seeks to raise awareness of a number of keyhealth issues. This evening’s topic is on mental health and the construction industry.
Mental health is one of the least talked about issues, and is often seen as a taboo subject in a male dominated industry. Research carried out by the HSE in 2007 found that 88% of those working in the industry experience some level of work-related stress, with 5% describing themselves as suffering from a depression or anxiety related ‘illness’.
So what so we mean by mental health? What can we do as an industry to promote a mentally healthier workforce, and what are your legal obligations as employers?
