You are invited to the Smith Institute’s Parliamentary launch and roundtable: ‘A Strategic Approach to the UK Construction Industry’ by Stephen Gruneberg, Honorary Professor at the Bartlett School of Construction and Project Management, UCL. The event will include a presentation by Stephen, with responses from Government, MPs, industry representatives and other stakeholders. There will then be a Q&A with invited guests.

Against the backdrop of Brexit, major upgrades to the UK’s infrastructure, an ambitious housebuilding programme and the Government’s recent Construction Sector Deal, the report calls for the transformation of the sector. Stephen describes the sector as often litigious and sometimes confrontational and provides a balanced critique of decades of failed interventions and promises. At the same time, he feels a proper defence of the construction industry is long overdue. He argues that the problems facing the construction industry can be overcome by reforms that are urgently needed.

A new approach should include: a profound change in attitude towards the construction industry, a redefinition of the sector, a new Ministry of Construction, major reforms to the construction education and training framework, and a push for higher employment standards.
