About this event

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) invites you to come and network with colleagues from a range of civil engineering backgrounds over a glass of wine and to enjoy a double lecture on two high profile civil engineering projects. You can also hear how the ICE can support young engineers in their professional development.

The event will include members of the ICE Graduate and Student Network, British Geotechnical Association Early Career Group, British Tunnelling Society Young Members, Transport Planning Society Young Professionals and others.

The event will consist of a welcome introduction, joint lecture, followed by plenty of time for drinks and networking. Refreshments will be provided. This event is free to attend but places are limited. Please register in advance.

The National Taichung Theatre is a major new cultural building in Taichung, Taiwan. It had a partial opening in 2014 and will officially open to public in 2016. For this building, architect Toyo Ito envisioned a new architecture that breaks away from the traditional Cartesian grid system to enrich the spatial experience. The structural engineering required to achieve this vision required Arup to take an innovative approach to both the design and construction methods.

The Garden Bridge is a new garden in the heart of London, spanning across the Thames. With construction due to begin in early 2016 the project will be complete by summer 2018.

Dr Christian Dercks, the project engineer of the Taichung Theatre, will describe the geometry, analysis, design and construction of this unique structure.

Dr Francis Archer, the lead engineer of the Garden Bridge, will describe how the project came about, the vision the conceiver of the project Joanna Lumley had, the concept of her chosen designer Thomas Heatherwick, and how the lead consultants Arup have helped make this a reality.
