CIC Welcomes New Regional Chairs

This year CIC has successfully completed its compliment of regional committees by reviving a committee in the North West region and starting a new committee in the West Midlands. Both committees have met twice this year and we wanted to profile our new chairs of these regions.

Richard Hapgood, CIC West Midlands Chair
Richard is current President and Registered Fellow of the Association for Project Safety (RFaPS). Trained originally as a Quantity Surveyor and Construction Manager he describes himself as a builder of teams, both professional, and hobby!
His is an experienced construction professional with a 45 year pedigree in multi functional construction majoring not only in housing, education; health care, refurbishment projects and new build works for the commercial, and private sector but also for all types of building, civil engineering, and plant and equipment installation works for the automotive, heavy engineering, transport, and food and beverage industries. Richard is a registered CDM Co-ordinator with over 15 years experience, author of many papers, presenter of lectures on construction best practice and a co-opted to the CIC Health & Safety Committee in October 2012

Aled Williams, CIC NW Regional Chair
Aled has contributed to the development of Built Environment education with enthusiasm and effectiveness, at multiple levels. Activities range from the ‘chalk face’ of student learning, through faculty and institutional initiatives to regional, national and international projects. Aled has a track record of successfully leading on industry-Higher Education projects with funding bodies including: HEFCE; HEA; JISC, Construction Skills and EU.
At the HEA his role is pivotal at the discipline interface between the Academy and practitioners and staff at all levels in Higher Education as well as agencies and professional bodies. Aled is a tutor with substantial experience both within the School and in his previous employment teaching professionally accredited Built Environment courses in Higher Education. He developed an award winning MSc in Construction Management in partnership with industry.
He has been active in a number of projects that will bring significant benefits to the sector’s teaching and learning. A recent example is Open Resources for Built Environment Education (www.orbee.org). This combination of backgrounds underpins his practice as a teacher which has always been to expose students to authentic learning environments where learners apply their knowledge to practical problems informed by industry engagement.
This aligns with an ethos of industry linked, applied research in partnership with the key industry collaborators within the built environment. His current research interests include industry engagement in higher education, flexible learning and employability. He is also vice-chair on ConstructionSkills ‘Standards and Qualifications Strategic Committee’. Prior to this he worked for NHS Estates in Wales and in Building Surveying practice.
