CIC celebrates its 25th Anniversary in 2013

Posted: 14th June 2013

On 1 November 2013 the Construction Industry Council (CIC) will celebrate 25 years as the representative forum for the professional bodies, research organisations and specialist business associations for professional services providers in the construction industry.

CIC began life in 1988, when it was formed as the Building Industry Council (BIC), founded by the leading five chartered institutions. It was renamed the CIC in 1990. Today CIC has 31 member institutions and 12 associates, making a collective membership of 500,000 individual professionals and 25,000 firms of construction consultants.

Now, as then, CIC adheres to the same objectives that led to its creation: ‘to speak with one voice’; ‘to achieve a consensus’; ‘to achieve better performance in the industry’; ‘to ensure the product is what the client needs’; and to ‘ensure that the full range of skills and knowledge is available in the industry’. These tenets are still what drive the CIC forward more than 25 years on.

CIC provides an advocacy role on the collective behalf of its members to government, both nationally and in the regions. It sees itself as a critical friend and associate of government, working operationally with the Chief Construction Adviser and colleagues across many government departments, to ensure that policies and activities are developed in line with the best available multidisciplinary expertise.

As part of its anniversary celebrations, CIC would like to record this moment in time with its own anniversary photography competition. It invites members and the wider community to participate and capture the UK built environment at its finest.

The competition is free to enter and open to all UK residents. The winner and two runners-up will each receive cash prizes. Further information can be found here.

Moreover, to mark this milestone, CIC has planned a series of special anniversary events which will include: the Happold Medal Lecture; an Economic and Policy Forum; a Diversity Panel Workshop; a Higher Education Seminar; and a fun afternoon event to support the Construction Youth Trust; all this and much more, yet to be announced!
