CIC appoints Tony Burton Deputy Chairman

Posted: 17th October 2013

Following a meeting of its Council Members today (17 October), the Construction Industry Council announces the appointment of Tony Burton as its new Deputy Chairman commencing with immediate effect.

Tony is expected to succeed Jack Pringle, the incumbent Chairman, following CIC’s June 2014 Council meeting when Jack will stand down from his two year term of office and resume the role of Deputy Chairman for one last year, in accordance with CIC’s rules & byelaws.

Tony Burton is a Senior Partner at Gardiner & Theobald LLP, one of the world’s leading independent construction and property consultancies. He has over 30 years experience in the industry and has worked on major national and international projects across most sectors. These include extensions of both Terminals at Gatwick Airport, the World Cargo Centre at Heathrow for British Airways, the Trillium bid for project MoDel, major schemes at King’s Cross, The European Commissions’ new buildings in Luxembourg, The National Gallery refurbishment, and extension of St Martin in the Fields, and the procurement of The London Eye.

Taking up his new role, Tony Burton said: “I am delighted to be appointed as the new Deputy Chairman of CIC. I believe CIC has an increasingly important role to play within the construction industry in the wake of the Government’s new Industrial Strategy and I am delighted to be part of the team working alongside our existing Chairman, Jack Pringle and Chief Executive, Graham Watts. I look forward to both the challenges and opportunities that the role presents, and to addressing some of the key issues that we face as an industry; in particular, addressing the challenge of achieving low carbon buildings, defining standards for design quality and continually striving to improve safety in construction. I am personally interested in tackling key issues of concern to many in the industry such as creating a more positive image for construction, addressing the skills shortage and the need for greater diversity of gender and ethnicity.”

CIC Chief Executive, Graham Watts, welcomed the new appointment by saying: “Both Gardiner & Theobald and the RICS (a Founder member) have had a long tradition of supporting collaborative working in the construction industry and amongst the built environment professions both directly and through CIC. We are delighted to welcome Tony on board our leadership team at such a pivotal and vital time for the industry.”

The Council also appointed Ruth Reed, a former President of the RIBA, as a new Vice Chairman for a three year term with immediate effect.
