A Blueprint for Change

Duration: April 2016

Initiated by the CIC Diversity & Inclusion Panel, the diversity data gathering benchmark report, A Blueprint for Change (supported by the NHBC) was published in February 2016. It includes data from six CIC members - CIOB, ICE, NHBC, RICS, RIBA, RTPI - of 207,000 individual industry professionals in total.

Publication was followed with an industry event in April at the Institution of Civil Engineers attended by CIC members and some of the organisations which featured in the best practice case studies included in the report.

The report was positively received by the media and industry alike, and the CIC is planning for the report to be updated and published once again in 2018 with diversity data from more of its member institutions.

CIC would like, with the help of its members, to continue to lead the debate on how industry can become more diverse and inclusive. The current report builds on previous work initiated by the CIC Diversity & Inclusion Panel (Gathering and Reviewing Data on Diversity within the Construction Industry, first published in 2009) and it is pleasing to see that there have been improvements in the number of diversity categories being covered, for example in 2009 no information was collected on sexual orientation or disability. Ideally the CIC would like to see a consistent approach to data collection by 2018, by its members, in the following categories: age, gender ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and religion.

It is only with its members’ participation and willingness to gather and share data that this project will provide the insight needed into the progress being made in diversity and inclusivity in the industry.

As a result of the 2016 report the industry calls to action are:

  1. Address the needs of a multi-generational workforce, particularly in terms of retention, and focus efforts on attracting new entrants and building on the successes of attracting a more diverse millennial cohort;
  2. Provide greater support and celebrate inclusive activities and in particular those led by practitioners who are creating positive impact
  3. Collaboration from the institutions to collect a wider range of data and for greater participation in the project.

CIC welcomes the opportunity to discuss the next stage of the project and any support it can offer to ensure that the 2018 report is larger and ever more comprehensive.
