CIC Immediate Past Chairman appointed as CBE
Professor John Nolan, the immediate past Chair of the Construction Industry Council, has been appointed as a CBE in the New Year’s Honours list. He receives the honour for services to structural engineering and the construction industry.
As well as being the current Deputy Chair of CIC, Professor Nolan is Director of Birmingham-based practice, John Nolan Associates, and a Past President of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE).
Professor Nolan was (unusually) Chair of the CIC for three years, serving an additional year for procedural requirements, handing over to his successor Stephen Hodder MBE, in June 2019. He remains the Deputy Chairman until June 2020. During his term as Chairman, Professor Nolan has spearheaded the CIC’s response to the Grenfell fire, bringing the 35 member organisations of the CIC together under a common cause of improving building safety; he has led the CIC activity on procure for better value in support of the work of the Construction Leadership Council; he has also been a director of the Considerate Constructors Scheme.
On his appointment, Professor Nolan said: “I am very proud to have been nominated for such a prestigious honour. I am also very conscious that it is often the leaders of teams that get honoured and that would never happen without the excellent work of their teams. I would like to express my appreciation for the tremendous work of the organisations that I have had the privilege of leading….”

Professor Nolan is a Chartered Engineer with over forty years’ experience in the construction industry; a Fellow of both the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Institution of Civil Engineers. He is also a Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor of Innovation at the University of Birmingham.
Professor Nolan started his career as a labourer to become one of the founders of two successful engineering consultancies, one of which, Nolan Associates, he still chairs. He has been responsible for projects up to the value of £300 million. He is also one of the founders and chairman of a property development company and is a non-executive director of a power company.
