CIC publishes an Essential Principles Guide for Clients, Developers and Contractors

The Construction Industry Council (CIC) has published a second Essential Principles Guide for Creating an Accessible and Inclusive Environment which aims to support, guide and motivate clients, developers and contractors to achieve high standards of access and inclusion in all their projects.

The Guide sets out 6 guiding principles that can be applied from project inception and strategic definition, through preparation and brief, procurement and tender processes to appraisal of final outcomes. The aim is that those who own and pay for development take responsibility for achieving an inclusive development process. If leaders in the construction industry champion inclusion from the outset, those employed to design, construct and manage projects are more likely to achieve high quality accessible and inclusive developments.

Tony Burton, Partner at Gardiner & Theobald and CIC’s Inclusive Environment Champion said of this second publication: “We are delighted to be able to expand upon the work of the first Essential Principles Guide published last year and was imbedded by some of the Built Environment Professional Institutions. This second guide is specifically for Clients, Developers and Contractors as they have a significant influence on how accessible and inclusive their projects can be. We would like to thank the leading industry firms who have endorsed the principles in the guide and aim to promote them throughout their organisation.”

The guide can be downloaded for free from CIC’s website here.

The first CIC’s ‘Essential Principles Guide’ for Built Environment Professionals set out 6 key principles to help all built environment professionals create and deliver an accessible and inclusive built environment.

CIC has also published a Teaching and Learning Guide bringing inclusive design into built environment education aimed at all built environment educators.
