Landscape Institute seeks views on potential LVIA accreditation scheme

Posted: 17th September 2025

The Landscape Institute (LI) has launched a feasibility study to investigate the potential of developing an LVIA Quality Mark and invites both members and non-members to complete a questionnaire on the feasibility of a Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment (LVIA) Quality Mark.

The Landscape Institute (LI) has launched a feasibility study to investigate the potential of developing an LVIA Quality Mark.

A dedicated LVIA Quality Mark will provide a formal accreditation route to uphold the standards of this vital landscape assessment tool.

The LI is aware of a growing concern from its members regarding inconsistencies in the standards of LVIA, that could bring the landscape profession into disrepute. We are taking action to uphold the standards and investigating a combination of initiatives to address this issue, including better guidance and training, and the development of certification for individuals and organisations, in consultation with LI members.

The LVIA accreditation scheme would allow organisations in the UK to commit to excellence in their LVIA activities, and have this commitment independently reviewed. It would be a voluntary scheme separate from the Landscape Institute registration (since there are LI-registered organisations who do not provide LVIA services) and would be akin to the ISEP EIA Quality Mark.

Questionnaire and webinar

To gather data on the desirability of an accreditation scheme, the LI is inviting practitioners and anyone who encounters LVIAs in their work to complete a questionnaire. The questionnaire will gather opinions on what should be included in an LVIA accreditation scheme; interest in an organisational scheme and/or an individual scheme; and next steps.

Participants are invited to complete the questionnaire here by 20 October 2025.

To introduce the LVIA accreditation consultation and questionnaire, the LI will be hosting a free-to-attend webinar on 25 September 2025.
