CIC Diversity Panel Chair Wins First Women Award

Warmest congratulations to CIC Diversity chair Jane Wernick who won the First Women Award in the ‘Built Environment category’ on Wednesday 12 June.
Jane Wernick of Jane Wernick Associates collected her award for First Women of the Built environment at a glamorous awards ceremony held at the London Marriott and hosted by broadcaster and sports personality Clare Balding.
A driving force behind the CIC Diversity Panel Jane Wernick has worked in the construction industry for many years and is most recognised for her work as the engineer behind the structural design of the Millennium Wheel. The first woman structural engineer to be made both an Associate and an Associate Director at Arup, Jane founded her own company Jane Wernick Associates in 1998.
Jane fought off tough competition from five other remarkable women shortlisted for the First Women Award for the Built Environment category namely Pat Duggan, Regional Director, Balfour Beatty, Barbara Jones, Director, Straw Works, Gill Riley, MD, GGR Group, Sue Roaf, Professor of Architectural Engineering, Heriot –Watt University and Julie White, MD, D-Drill Master Drillers
On winning the award, Jane said, “It was a great honour to win this award. I am passionate about the contribution that engineers can make to the built environment. As the founder of a small firm of structural engineers I felt very proud to be part of such an amazing group of women, who have been successful in such an extraordinary range of business activities.”
The judges said that Jane has pioneered and championed engineering in a way that leads a clear and visible path for the next generation. She has found a way past the glass ceiling by founding an innovative practice structure that encourages participation in her business in its fullest sense. Her outstanding talent is combined with an endearing humility.
