Constructionarium and CIOB Host Groundbreaking School Visit to Inspire Future Construction Professionals

Posted: 28th March 2025

On Thursday, 27th March, Constructionarium and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) hosted a first-of-its-kind school visit, welcoming students from Springwood High School, Kings Lynn, Norfolk. This unique event at Constructionarium gave students the opportunity to explore career options in the construction sector, engage with higher education students and industry professionals, alongside gaining hands-on experience.

The visit was coordinated by Josh Nelson, Apprentice Site Manager at Morgan Sindall and CIOB member, who ensured the day was both informative and inspiring. Sixteen students visited Constructionarium, a not-for-profit organisation that specialises in delivering unique experimental learning, for an engaging morning of learning and discovery.

Equipped with PPE generously provided by Morgan Sindall, the students explored the sector through interactive discussions and hands-on activities. They also had the chance to meet university students from the University of Salford and the University of Leeds, who showcased the scaled construction projects they had been working on in their respective teams throughout the week. These teams had been building iconic structures, simulating real-life contracting experiences, and were able to share insights into the challenges of their event and the lessons learned.

One highlight of the day was a practical bridge-building exercise delivered by Constructionarium, designed to encourage teamwork and problem-solving skills amongst the school children. This site simulated activity was thought-provoking and engaging, giving the students a real taste of working in the industry.

CITB, which kindly provided lunch, also spoke to the students about the wide range of career opportunities available within the sector and potential next steps for apprenticeship, college or employment.

Julia Stevens, CEO of Constructionarium Ltd, said We were delighted to host this school visit as there are so many educational and career opportunities within construction to showcase. It was fantastic for the visiting students to hear first-hand from university students about their career journeys, educational routes and the learning they are currently receiving. They were excellent role models to this group of potential new employees."

Josh Nelson added “I am so pleased this event came to life and grateful to Morgan Sindall for funding the PPE, CITB for providing lunch, and Constructionarium for hosting such a brilliant event. It’s vital that we continue to inspire the next generation of construction professionals. The feedback we received from the students showed a increase in their interest into entering the sector. I hope this collaboration with Constructionarium will be the start of a fruitful and long-standing partnership.”

This event marks an important step in engaging young people with the construction industry, demonstrating the diverse career pathways available, and providing real-world experiences that bring the sector to life
