The Next Generation
Posted: 15th July 2010
CIC-ConstructionSkills projects were developed to address the decreasing number of school leavers entering the industry, to raise awareness of the various career options, to promote diversity and to help young people make informed decisions about their futures.
These schemes place volunteer professionals from industry in schools enabling students to learn about careers, study and working life.
The Coaching Scheme
Volunteers and students meet regularly (typically once a month for 5 sessions over one academic year). The sessions usually happen outside of school hours with each workshop typically lasting one to two hours.
Workshops involve a mixture of activities designed to replicate some of the typical work tasks, along with discussions and presentations.
During the workshops the students developed ideas for building pods from the initial sketch to large scale models. While constructing the pods, the students (working in teams) had to think about various issues relating to working in built environment including cost, sustainability and usability. The key elements of the project were to highlight the importance of communication, effective delegation, responsible leadership and working effectively within a team.
In addition to the regular coaching sessions, the students were taken on a ‘site visit’ to see first hand various aspects of the construction process. Site visits included the Olympic Park Aquatics Centre and Hope Hospitalin Salford.
The Future Professionals Programme
The Future Professionals programme piloted a business mentoring scheme for students enrolled on the Engineering and CBE Diploma courses at schools and colleges in Newham, East London.
