Many congratulations to CIC on reaching its 35th anniversary. It’s a landmark moment for CIC, along with its founding members including IStructE, CIBSE, CIOB RIBA, and RICS. CIC was created in 1988 by professional bodies to act as a forum and single voice for the built environment.

The late 1980s were obviously a very different landscape to now for the construction industry. Issues such as the circular economy, net zero, sustainability, and inclusion were not the key considerations that they rightly are here in the 21st century.

Much has changed over this time, most recently of course with the Building Safety Act which has come into effect, and the very necessary focus on sustainability and net zero.

CIC’s work to shape the built environment has grown in influence over the 35 years. We’ve been honoured to be part of CIC’s collaborative strategic direction. Such joint working has been core to CIC’s history and we know it will shape its future too.

There is an immense power in working together for success, especially when it comes to flagging key issues for the industry. CIC has been instrumental in doing this, bringing in other’s expertise to co-create guidance and reports that inform on a wide range of issues relevant to our industry. CIC is also instrumental in liaising with government regarding government policies, presenting a collective voice to inform policy-making.

Now, in its 35th year, CIC’s strapline is more important than ever – “Built environment professions together.” This truly sums up CIC’s ethos – that together we can instigate change for the future, from net zero to inclusion to safety in the built environment.

The shared public interest remit between us all is vital for the future as there are many challenges ahead. I firmly believe that collaboration turns challenges into opportunities. Through CIC and its members working together, we will continue to seek out these opportunities, bringing benefits for society and the built environment in which we all live and work.

In marking the CIC’s 35th anniversary, we celebrate more than the passage of time - we commend a collaborative legacy and a joint future that continues to shape the very foundations of the built environment.
