National Occupational Standards (NOS) Reviews
Duration: 2014
CIC would like to thank all those who took part in the working groups and the consultation process. Your participation and involvement has ensured that the national occupational standards (NOS) are fit for purpose and reflect changing industry practices.
Built Environment Design Consultancy Practice
These National Occupational Standards (NOS) are concerned with directing design practice and making strategic decisions when leading and managing. They serve a wide range of design disciplines, including civil & structural design, building surveying, architectural technology and architecture. They apply to designers who work on new build, alterations, repairs, and refurbishment and conservation projects.
Construction Senior Management
These National Occupational Standards are relevant to all those practitioners in the construction sector who are working in a policy-making, director or senior management capacity. The standards are suitable for managers working in a wide range of job roles. These include production managers, commercial managers, operations directors of smaller construction companies, property and facilities managers and specialist construction managers.
Industry Benchmark
The NOS provide employers with an industry approved benchmark to help them identify training needs, skills gaps and develop job descriptions. The N/SVQs qualifications derived from the NOS are recognised by professional bodies as a route to membership. They are also helping to improve health and safety on construction sites through the competency based Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card scheme.
CIAT Chair of Education Board, Sam Allwinkle said
“CIAT has been committed and involved in the development of these National Occupational Standards which will be used to inform post professional level qualifications in recognition of the high level of knowledge and skills that are required to lead and manage design and consultancy practice. CIAT encourages professional diversity of Chartered Architectural Technologists and the achievement of the NVQ/SVQ qualification would be recognised within the CIAT Professional Standards Framework and as assessed evidence for CIAT Membership.”
CIOB Head of Education, Rosalind Thorpe said,
“the CIOB welcomed the opportunity to be involved in the important work of reviewing and developing the national occupational standards. These standards underpin the National Vocational Qualifications, Level 7 NVQ in Construction Senior Management and Built Environment Design & Consultancy Practice. Both these qualifications provide an accelerated route to full-chartered membership of the CIOB. The new National Occupational Standards will ensure that these vocational qualifications meet the needs of employers and professional bodies.”
Head of Education Policy, Andrew Stanley said
“ICE is pleased to have been involved in developing these National Occupational Standards. They provide a much needed route for those already in design consultancy companies who wish to develop their knowledge and skills to higher levels. The skills and competences involved in completing the NVQ/SVQ qualifications will be invaluable in preparing for professional qualification with ICE.”
