The Coaching Scheme

Recruiting qualified new entrants to the construction industry is a priority especially in the professionals sector. As a result, the Construction Industry Council developed a scheme to increase the number of people considering Further and Higher Education in built environment and professional disciplines.
Aimed at secondary schools, the Coaching Scheme was set up to give students aged 13-14 the opportunity to work with construction professionals. The Coaching Scheme is a network of professional volunteers who run monthly sessions in schools over one academic year to encourage more people to think about a construction related career in the professional sector. The Coaching Scheme has proved to be a successful initiative within many schools throughout London, the Midlands and the North West of England from 2008 to 2010.
Summary of the Scheme
The Coaching scheme features a short series of informal workshops (held after school) where students have the opportunity to meet and learn from built environment professionals from varied disciplines.
The aim of the scheme is to:
- Raise awareness amongst young people about the huge range of study and career options available in the planning, design and management disciplines.
- Give children the chance to find out about careers directly from respected local built environment professionals, like you!
- Offer young people an opportunity to get a better understanding of the tasks and challenges that can be faced within the world of work.
The workshops will run over one academic year in schools across the UK. In addition to the workshops, the students have the opportunity of going out on a site visit – past visits have included the London Olympics site, Manchester Hilton and the Kings Cross Development.
